Grand Strand Restaurants Review

Planet Hollywood stars great food
as well as screen memorabilia

The big blue ball-shaped planet sitting on the ground next to Myrtle Beach’s Highway 17 Bypass is about as eye-catching as you can get, but it is what’s inside that not only fascinates customers, it’s the food that surprises everyone with its variety and quality.

When it comes to the most favorite menu item, the average person might think it’s a burger or some sort of giant salad, but it is lasagna. “L.A. Lasagna” to be specific. “It’s really unique. They deep fry it. It’s a meat and tube noodle dish that is fried on the outside which gives it a crusty taste and then Marinara sauce or a garlic cream sause is poured on it…it’s definitely one of our favorite dishes,” said Bob Baldwin, the Planet Hollywood general manager.

All around the walls, which soar 30 feet upward to the curved ceiling, are movie star photographs, film set and scene mock-ups, a lot of real set pieces and even large screen TVs that constantly show clips from some of the all-time favorite Hollywood productions.

The Myrtle Beach Planet Hollywood is one of the most successful in the nation. Some big stars and Hollywood moguls have been investors in the chain. Some have made it, some have not, but the Myrtle Beach restaurant continues to draw a good crowd of visitors and locals as well as a lot of folks who return again and again because of the food.

A burger lover is not going to be disappointed. There’s a seven-ouncer for the average appetite, a ten-ouncer for the really hungry burger lover and a 20-ounce “celebrity” burger made up of two ten-ounce patties for the really famished customer.

For Vegans, there’s a vegetarian burger and a wide variety of pastas, chicken entrees such as Chicken Alfredo and fajitas, and when it comes to fish, there is salmon and mahi-mahi in addition to plenty of shrimp selections including a blackened shrimp appetizer.

The richness of the desserts matches the regular menu items in every way. There is plenty of chocolate, a key lime pie and a huge cookie, which is really four cookies stacked into an ice cream sandwich with whipped cream on top.

To add to the atmosphere, live entertainment is provided seven nights a week during the peak tourist season and from Thursday though Sunday during the “off” season. A new aspect is the outdoor patio dining section just across from the new Legends Theater. Baldwin said many customers enjoy eating before walking across the parking lot to the theater and then returning to the restaurant for a nightcap. The Planet Hollywood bar is the first thing a customer comes to after climbing the “tube stairs,” entrance, and then it’s back down stairs into the main dining room. Some of the specialty drinks are named after moviedom icons…such as The Bourne Ultimatum made of 151 proof rum and coconut; Hellboy, made of Southern Comfort and Vodka, and the Terminator made of vodka, rum, gin, triple sec and Kahlua, topped with draught beer.

For looking for a midday or late night snack, the menu is filled with favorites such as fajitas, wontons, wings, dips, potato skins and Nachos Grande which in most cases is more than one person can eat.

Altogether Planet Hollywood has proven itself to be a Myrtle Beach institution that offers both great entertainment and really good food.
